Following my earlier statement on the situation at the University of Port Harcourt, I have had further discussions with a top member of the university management.

I was assured that the dissolution of the former Executive Council was occasioned by internal disagreements and infighting among members of the Exco, as well as the expiration of the tenure of the current executives.

The management further assured me that an Electoral Committee will be constituted tomorrow to oversee the affairs of the Students’ Union and conduct the next election in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Let me state clearly that we will continue to stand firmly against any attempt to oppress, suppress, or undermine any Students’ Union under this administration. The autonomy and democratic rights of Nigerian students remain sacrosanct.

However, I would also like to advise all SUG Presidents and student leaders to always operate within the rules and regulations governing their unions and to provide leadership through unity, consultation, and cooperation with other members of their Executive Councils.

Student leadership must be about service, responsibility, and unity—not unnecessary division.
